Goals of the project were to design a K-12 school to house an entire school district and its superintendent's office:
- design a facility whose architecture would blend in with the historic island village;
- construct the building on the existing site, while the existing school remained in operation;
- utilize local materials and energy efficient systems;
- include the community in every phase of the process;
- ensure the facility would provide superior educational spac, and would be used year-round by the public.
